Quotes (Aug. 21):
Laura Cowal, St. Catharines, ON – triple medalist – (women’s eight gold, women’s quad gold, women’s single)
“It’s always a challenge to switch from the larger boats to the small boat because I’m very team oriented. But I feel here I have the whole Ontario team behind me and I’m so proud to represent my province. I’ll go back to school (Michigan State) with this experience and the dream to one day make the Under 23 National Team in the future.”
Allisha Campaigne, Odessa, ON – gold medalist (lightweight women’s double with Alex Meiklejohn)
“We did a lot of sprint work to prepare for the shorter distance (1200m compared with the typical 2000m). It really helped us. BC had a good start and ours was not as good, but at around the 300-metre mark we just went for seven power strokes – we refocused and got our start back from them.”
Steph Davis, St. John’s, Nfld – bronze medal (women’s four) on winning Newfoundland and Labrador’s first medal of the Games
“We knew we could do it if we had our best race. Newfoundland is not expected to win medals, so we didn’t put any pressure on ourselves. We just all rowed our best race; I couldn’t have asked more from my teammates.”
