April 2016 Monthly Bulletin

ARA CAMP/ CSG UPDATE
Based on results from the 2016 ARA Erg Championships the ARA has invited 35 athletes to its camp in Invermere British-Columbia on April 15, 16 and 17, 2016. The ARA is encouraged by the number of high quality athletes attending and is hopeful that each and every individual will utilize this opportunity to their benefit.

All athletes who have been invited should now have received a proposed itinerary of all weekend activities and information regarding accommodation.   The ARA will handle all matters (including costs) regarding accommodation and transportation.   Athletes will be responsible for their own food.

Please note that athletes have until April 9, 2016 to confirm their attendance by emailing albertarowing@gmail.com; athletes who fail to confirm their attendance will be deemed ineligible.   Athletes who are attending will be required to sign an athlete waiver / code of conduct – no exceptions. These forms will be distributed to all attending athletes on Monday April 11, 2016.

Athletes who did not receive an invite to the camp should not perceive that they are that deemed ineligible for the 2017 Canada Summer Games. There will be several camps in the coming months that athletes will have an opportunity to participate in. In addition all athletes are reminded that selection to the team will not be decided until May /June of 2017.   Selection to the 2017 CSG Team will be based on one’s erg score and ability to move a boat.

ARA Erg Champs
The ARA would like to thank the Central Alberta Rowing Club for all their efforts in hosting the 2016 ARA Erg Championships. While the ARA does not monitor participation numbers from years past, registrants at the 2016 Erg Championships appeared to match or even exceed those from 2015 which at the time were the largest in this writer’s time. It was only a few short years ago where ARA struggled to get 90+ athletes registered for the event. The level of interest in our sport throughout Alberta is very encouraging and is a testament to the quality of volunteers, coaches and officials that are found all across this province.     Results from the event have been distributed to your coaches. Should you wish to obtain a copy of the results please get in touch with them.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2017 event where we hope to see over 200 registrants.

RCA Spring Trials
Do you have aspirations this summer of representing Canada at the World Junior Championships / U23 World Championships / Non Olympic Worlds and/ or other international events? If so you will be required to attend the 2016 RCA Spring Trials in Burnaby, British-Columbia or Welland Onatrio. Details around these events can be found by going to http://www.rowingcanada.org/sites/default/files/selection_bulletin2016v2.pdf

Prairie Championships
It is hard to believe but the first prairie regatta on the 2016 rowing calendar is only 7 short weeks away. Regatta packages for this event have been distributed to all coaches here in Alberta. Athletes / parents please mark your calendars. The Prairie Championships regatta is scheduled for May 28, 2016.

In the News
Former CRC athlete Ashton Brown competed in the Oxford / Cambridge Boat Race for the second consecutive year this past month. Unfortunately for Ashton her Cambridge crew had a difficult time in managing the conditions and her boat nearly sank as it approached the finish line; regardless a great accomplishment Ashton.
