November Monthly Bulletin

NRC 2017
Amongst near perfect conditions, 16 Alberta athletes competed against Canada’s best at the 2017 National Rowing Championships this past weekend in Burnaby, British-Columbia.  For those unfamiliar with the format of the event, the National Rowing Championships is truly the only regatta on the calendar where medallists from the 2017 World Championships (members of Canada’s Senior Women’s 8+) line up and race head to head against junior, U23 and senior athletes across the country.  Adding to the intrigue of the event, athletes race exclusively in singles and pairs to determine a true national champion and provide athletes with a national ranking.  Needless to say the environment can be both intimidating and inspiring but as this weekend showed, Alberta athletes are amongst our nations best winning a record 2 gold medals and adding a silver medal.

Nicole Hare won Silver in the Senior Women’s Pair with Christine Roper from Ontario. Karl Hare won gold in the Junior Men’s single and Jeremy Hall won gold in the TA single. Alberta athletes who finished in the top ten of their respective events were as follows:

Sam Garber – 99h Senior Light Men’s1x
Elana Taub – 8th place – Senior Light Women’s 1x
Colleen Nesbitt and Kasia Gruchalla Wesierski – 4h place – Senior Women’s Pair
Jessie Loutit and Amelie Schumacher– 5th place – Senior Women’s Pair
Jessica Sevick and Gill Cattet – 9th place – Senior Women’s Pair

Great job to all Alberta Athletes!

WESTERN CANADA UNIVERSITY ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Lakeland College proved once again its dominance in Novice rowing by winning the Novice Women’s 8+ at the WCURC Regatta in Victoria, British-Columbia for what this writer believes to be the 6th consecutive year.   The Rustlers are a power on the Novice University Rowing Circuit and demonstrate this year after year. Congratulations to the coach Kati White and the athletes who make up the program.

Canadian University Rowing Championships:
The University of Alberta and University of Calgary were both represented at the 2017 Canadian University Rowing Championships in Burnaby, British-Columbia.  The event itself features the best university rowers from across the country vying for the title of national champion in 6 separate events for men and women (Open 1x, Lightweight 1x, Lightweight 2x, Lightweight 4+, Open Pair, Open Eight).  While neither school returned home with any hardware this year, both schools should be pleased with their performances.

Alberta Athletes who competed in an “A” Final were:
Hannah Anderson and Courtney Kruschel  – University of Calgary- Senior Women’s Pair – 4th place overall.
