Canada Cup:

There was a time where the Canada Cup was an annual occurrence.  A week following the Royal Canadian Henley regatta, provincial teams would convene in Montreal for national supremacy.  After a 20+ year hiatus, the Canada Cup regatta was introduced in 2025, as an opportunity for the country’s best U20 rowers to compete in their provincial colors.  Team Alberta did not disappoint finishing in second place in the point championship to Team Ontario.

Provincial Carding:

The ARA has heard the calls.  Will the ARA Continue with its Provincial Carding intiative in 2025?  The answer is a resounding yes.  Details regarding the 2025 provincial carding program won’t be released until mid-October, but athletes can help support their case to be carded via the following.

  1. Erg Score.  A 2K score will be an important consideration with the 2025 Provincial Carding Program.  Make sure you continue to emphasize the erg in your training as a 2K score in late October / early November will be a requisite with this years program.
  2. Represent your club at local, national and international regatta’s – The 2025 summer season may have concluded but there are still a number of regattas on the rowing calendar including Dino Sprints, Telford Bullrush Stake Race, Western Canada University Rowing Championships, Canadian University Rowing Championships, Head of the Gorge, Tail of the Gorge, Head of the Charles and so forth.
  3. For those in the ARA Next Gen program continue to participate to the best of your abilities.

Rowing Stories

Calgarian, Shaye de Paiva will be making her debut at a Senior World Championships in 2025, a well deserved achievement in her development pathway.  A graduate of Queen’s university, Shaye found the sport largely by chance.  The ARA through its development program identified Shaye’s brother, Rawdon, through one of its testing programs and a few short years later Shaye decided to follow her brother down to the club.  Shaye quickly progressed as a athlete through the help of her coach Pascal Ferraro and by the end of 2019 was becoming recognized on the national scene…then COVID happened.  Undetettered, in 2022, Shaye represented Canada at the 2022 U23 World Championships finishing in 7th place in the women’s 8+ and in the fall of that year she made the decision to relocate to Vancouver Island to train full time.  In 2023 she represented Canada at the 2023 Pan-American Games winning bronze in the women’s double and quad events and gold in the women’s 8+.  In 2024, Shaye represented Canada in the Women’s quad at the Royal Henley Regatta and finished her year representing Alberta at the 2024 NRC Event.

The 2025 World Rowing Championships are just another step in Shaye’s development pathway and we in Alberta are excited to watch every step of her journey.  Good Luck Shaye!
