2014 Alberta Coaches Conference

Calgary February 7th and 8th, 2014

The Alberta Rowing Association in association with the Calgary Rowing Clubs is pleased to announce that it will host its fifth annual coaching conference on February 7th and 8th, 2013 in Calgary, Alberta. For the first time in three years, this years conference will feature a guest speaker from within the sport of rowing, and is considered a driving force within Canada’s Domestic Development Program(s) This years special guest speaker will be Peter Shakespear – Director of National Talent I.D and Development Programs. Peter has played playing a major role in developing Talent I.D programs around the world. He has worked with the Australia Institute of Sport, the British Rowing Federation and is now in looking to create a Canadian made development program here in Canada. Don’t miss this opportunity to welcome Peter to the Province of Alberta and hear about some of the changes he has in store for Canada’s Domestic Development Programs

The Conference is open to all – athletes, coaches, officials and even parents who wish to not only gain insight into our sport but perhaps even see themselves sitting in the coach boat in the future. Coaches who are currently working towards their coaching certification (s) will not receive credit towards their professional development at this conference. However, we ensure all coaches that the material presented will be relevant so you can take new information and use it with the rowers that you are coaching.

The Conference will take the format as follows:

Day One – February 7th
Friday Evening 6:30pm – 7:00pm – Registration

Friday Evening 7:00pm – 9:00pm

Friday Evening Social – 9:15pm Bella Roma Pub in Lakeview

Day Two – February 8, 2014
8:00am – Registration for those who did not attend Friday

8:15 – 9:20am – Winter Coaching for Juniors.
Winter training in Alberta can be long and tedious for even the most dedicated of U19 athletes here in Alberta. Here the moderator will introduce drills, games and some sample training plans that will assist in motivating our U19 athletes up to the Alberta Erg Championships and into the Spring.

9:20am to 9:30am – Coffee Break – All Groups

9:30 – 10:25am – Rigging Refresher
Rigging is an essential component of any rowing program, regardless of skill level. Here the moderator will review the basic components of rigging including pitch, span, and setting the footstops. Based on responses the ARA may set up two rigging stations during this segment – 1 for Coaches will little or no rigging background and another for those who simply want a refresher.

10:25am – 10:40am Coffee Break – All Groups

10:40 – 11:20am – Nutrition
John Reid – Boathouse Manager at the Calgary Rowing Club will guide you through a session that will be sure to assist your athletes in getting the proper nutrients.

11:25am – 12:10 An Athletes Perspective – The Transition from Lightweight to Heavyweight
Hear from a former Heavyweight Rower about her decision to go Lightweight, the challenges and steps she took to lose weight – while pursuing her dreams within the sport of rowing.

12:15pm – 1:15pm – Lunch – All

1:15pm –2:15pm – Lessons Learned from the 2013 Canada Summer Games and applications towards 2017
A roundtable discussion on what went well at the 2013 Canada Summer Games, what did not and how you the coach can assist the next group of ARA athletes in being involved with the 2017 Games.

2:20p – 3:10pm – A Coxwain’s Perspective
Mark Laidlaw, a former coxswain with Canada’s National Team will provide insight on how coaches can support the development of competitive coxwains and as well athletes in our province.

3:10pm – 3:30pm – Coffee Break

3:30 – 4:15 – Moving Forward Together
An open discussion on how the ARA can better support the clubs, and how the clubs can support the ARA in the year ahead.

4:15pm – Course Wrap Up / Adjourn

Registration:
The cost to register for this event is $20, which includes the cost of lunch and course materials.  Entry fees will be collected on February 7th
