ARA Erg Championships
The Central Alberta Rowing Club played host to the 2023 ARA Erg Championships on Saturday March 6, 2023.  With over 110+ athletes in action across 7 different clubs it provides inspiration to this writer to get in shape for the 2024 version.  Until then we are left to recollect on an event that saw nearly 20 athletes compete in the Novice Women event, a seemingly record number of junior athletes in attendance and a number of personal best performances The ARA commends our coaches, officials, volunteers and clubs for the success of this year’s event and a big thanks goes out to the Central Alberta Rowing Club for once again their efforts year in organizing this annual competition.  Results from the event are posted online under the link: https://www.regattacentral.com/regatta/results.jsp?job_id=8276&org_id=0

Athletes in the News
Congratulations to Shaye De Paiva, Andrew Hubbard, Kendra Hartley and Olivia McMurray.  The four Alberta based athletes will represent Canada at the 2023 Pan-American games qualification regatta in Santiago Chile, from April 15th to 19th.  While the purpose of the regatta is to qualify boats for the Pan-American Games, the event has proven to be a valuable stepping stone for many aspiring Olympians.   In 2019 the ARA’s own Jessica Sevick utilized the experience at the Pan-American Games qualifier as the first step in her journey to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.   Congratulations to all four athletes. 

Not to be outdone the ARA passes on its Congratulations to Kasia Gruchalla Wesierski for her silver medal performance at the 2023 World Indoor Erg Championships held last month in Mississauga Ontario. 

The 2023 National Indoor Rowing Day was held on Saturday February 11, 2023.  The event is designed to get Canadians active and help grow the sport of rowing across the country.  This year, Albertans made a significant presence on the event with the 2nd largest number of participants (117) and as well the second highest total of metres rowed (738,000).  Congratulations to all who participated. 

Invermere
Once again this year, the ARA intends on facilitating a training camp in Invermere B.C at the end of April 2023.  The camp is designed to assist athletes in preparing for the on-water season and will be open to all experienced athletes* (Junior through Masters) across the province.  Do note that at this time the ARA has not finalized the date for this camp but can confirm it will likely take place April 21-23, 2023.  Do note that athletes will be responsible for their own transportation to and accommodation in Invermere.    

*Please note that athletes who wish to attend must be proficient rowers capable of rowing in all types of conditions (Any exceptions must be granted by the ARA)
