December Information Bulletin #10

Happy Holidays
From our family to yours the Alberta Rowing Association wants to wish all of its athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers the very best this holiday season.

CSG Winter Camp
The 2013 Canada Summer Games is a multi sport inter-provincial competition that will see the nations best young athletes compete against one another across 30 different sports in Sherbrooke Quebec. The ARA recognises the significance of these games and with the opening ceremonies now only 21 months is beginning to take steps to prepare our U19 athletes (As at December 31, 2011) for these games. With this in mind the ARA will be hosting a winter camp from Friday Feb 22 through to Monday Feb 25, 2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The camp itself is by invitation only and will be based on the results from the 2,000m erg requirement that was part of the November RADAR Testing Protocol or alternatively a 2,000 erg test pulled between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013. The following erg standards are requirements for obtaining an invite to the camp.

Heavyweight Men 6:35
Lightweight Men 6:50
Heavyweight Women 7:35
Lightweight Women 7:50

Athletes who have met the aforementioned standards are to get in contact with Hillary Baker or Alex Marchuk immediately for flight information. Athletes who are invited to the camp will have their hotel / boat rental and some food expenses paid for.

It is the opinion of the ARA that the erg standards required to attend this camp are reflective of the erg standards needed to participate at the 2013 CSG. As indicated in the October Report, the ARA identified erg standards that athletes should be looking to achieve to attend the 2013 CSG Selection Camp. Those standards were: Heavy Men – 6:30 / Heavy Women 7:30 / Light Men 6:45 / Light Women 7:45.

ARA AGM
At the ARA AGM the ARA said good-bye to two long standing executive members; Brian McGuigan V.P Development, and Linda Thompson – Secretary. Brian had been in his role since 2008 while Linda had been an executive member since 2006. We want to thank both Brian and Linda for their contributions to the sport of rowing. Replacing Brian on the ARA Board will be Sheila Findlay of the Edmonton Rowing Club, while Ole Tietz will fill the void left by Linda’s departure.

ARA Coaching Conference
The Alberta Rowing Association in association with the Edmonton and University of Alberta Rowing Clubs are pleased to announce that it will host its fourth annual coaching conference on January 11 and 12, 2013 in Edmonton, Alberta. For the second consecutive year, this years conference will feature a guest speaker from outside the sport of rowing, but widely recognised within Edmonton and football circles alike. This years special guest speaker will be Kavis Reed – Head Coach of the Edmonton Eskimos. Kavis played for the Eskimos from 1995 to 1999. Following his playing career Kavis served in a variety of assistant coaching roles in the CFL before being signed on to become Head Coach of the Edmonton Eskimos in 2010.

The Conference is open to all – athletes, coaches, officials and even parents who wish to not only gain insight into our sport but perhaps even see themselves sitting in the coach boat in the future.
