January 2022 Monthly Bulletin

Happy New Year!

A Happy New Year to all of our coaches, officials and athletes.

We at the ARA understand that these are uncertain times in the Province of Alberta given the ongoing COVID–19 pandemic.  At this time all athletes can train in their respective clubs (subject to local health restrictions).  If, however, you have personal reservations to training in a group environment and are looking for some training ideas while at home, please reach out to the writer directly at albertarowing@gmail.com.  We may have some training ideas that will help you in your preparations for the 2022 season.

Canada Summer Games

At this time, the ARA has not secured a location for this proposed camp; largely because clubs are reluctant to host outside groups on account of the COVID-19 situation here in Western Canada.  The ARA is continuing to sort out logistical matters and is hopeful that the camp will proceed; but if it cannot the ARA will shift gears and host a winter ski camp at a location here in Alberta.  Either way the camp itself will be by invitation only and will be based on results from the 2,000m erg requirement that was part of the November RADAR Testing Protocol or alternatively a 2,000m erg test pulled between November 1, 2021 and February 10, 2022. The following erg standards are requirements for obtaining an invite to the camp.

                          Heavyweight Men              6:40

                          Lightweight Men                6:55

                          Heavyweight Women          7:40

                          Lightweight Women            8:05

Once the ARA has additional details we will be in touch.  In the meantime, athletes are encouraged to get their 2K score into the writer at albertarowing@gmail.com to secure a spot for the camp.

To all athletes, it is important to note that an invitation to the 2022 Winter Camp should in no way infer that an athlete has been selected to the 2022 CSG Team.  The 2022 CSG Team will be finalized at a Selection Camp tentatively scheduled for June 3, 4and 5 in Calgary, Alberta.  The selection camp will be by invite only and will be granted to those athletes who have achieved the aforementioned erg standards.  Final selection to the team will be based on water performance in a 1x or 2-.

Rowing Canada Coaches Conference

The Rowing Canada Coaches Conference is an annual gathering of coaches, officials, volunteers and athletes from across the country to learn about all things rowing.  The conference was initially intended to be in person this year but given the spread associated with the Omicron variant a decision has been made to make the conference virtual once again this year.  As the conference is now virtual RCA will once again provide the conference free of charge to any RCA Member.  We at the ARA believe this is a tremendous opportunity for all interested to hear from a worldwide panel of experts within our sport.    At this time RCA has not updated its registration page but please check the following link for registration information in a few days.  https://rowingcanada.org/conference/
