June 2013 Information Bulletin #6

CSG Selection Camp
Amongst near perfect water conditions the ARA held its 2013 CSG Selection Camp on June 1-2 in Calgary, Alberta. While the team has not been completely finalised at this time, initial appearances are that Alberta Rowing has the potential to do quite well at the 2013 CSG in Sherbrooke, Quebec. As was communicated to athletes at the camp some have been formally named to the team, while others have been asked to return for additional information before a final decision can be made. Regardless of which category athletes find themselves in, we remind everyone that that making the CSG team is only the beginning. It is our goal at the ARA to have a successful games and to achieve those means we have some work to do.

As has been stated by Tim Fleming V.P – Technical of the Alberta Rowing Association the expectation is that all CSG bound athletes train 7-8 times per week. If all athletes can put forth this kind of an effort over the next 60 days it is our opinion that we will achieve the successes we all want. If not, we will have our challenges.

In the coming days athletes will be given a list of training camps that will be planned for the summer. In addition to planned camps, we will be encouraging athletes from Calgary and Edmonton, to practice together as often as possible. As athletes wait for further information in this regard, everyone associated with the 2013 Games is asked to register on-line as soon as possible and no later than June 13, 2013. To register go to teamalberta.org click Canada Summer Games on the left hand side of the page and then click “participant registration”. In addition to the registration documents everyone must complete the CCES doping e-learning course. If there are any questions / concerns in this regard please email albertarowing@gmail.com

Boat Race
On May 11, 2013 The Calgary and Edmonton Rowing Clubs squared in the inaugural Boat Race. The event was an huge success with both the Edmonton and Calgary Rowing Clubs taking home a piece of the championship (Calgary winning the Women’s and Novice 8+’s and Edmonton winning the Men’s 8+). Staging an event that featured a live feed of the race, a formal banquet and exciting racing could not have happened without the efforts of the Edmonton Rowing Club and particularly Ole Tietz and Ali Williams. Hopefully in 150 years the Edmonton Boat Race is mentioned in the same context as the Oxford/ Cambridge Boat Race.

Junior National Team
Congratulations to McKenzie Lukacs whose performance at the 2013 RCA Junior Selection Camp has placed her in consideration for the the Women’s 2x at the upcoming World Junior Rowing Championships in Lithuania. To be considered for the team McKenzie had to first attend the RCA Development Regatta in Burnaby B.C where she ended up being the top sculler in a Double Seat Racing Matrix. Her successes in Burnaby earned her an invite to the RCA Junior National Selection Camp in Welland, Ontario. We at the ARA congratulate McKenzie on her successes.

Henley Funding
The 2013 Henley Funding document is finalized and has been posted on the ARA website. Please note that there are changes from previous years. Athletes who wish to be considered for Henley Funding should familiarize themselves with the document.

Regina Sprints
The 2013 version of the Regina Sprints regatta was a good but wet affair in Regina, Saskatchewan. Both the Edmonton and Calgary rowing clubs faced some stiff competition from Saskatchewan in the Junior aged events who are gearing up for the CSG themselves this year. In the Senior events things were a little different as Calgary or Edmonton athletes won every open event on the Men’s side and every event but the Lightweight Women’s double and 1x on the Women’s side. The Calgary Rowing Club ended up winning the points championship for the third consecutive year.

CRC Reunion
The Calgary Rowing Club is hosting a rowing reunion for all past and present athletes in the clubs 40 year history on June 30th, 2013. If you know of someone who has been a past member of the Calgary Rowing Club we encourage them to register for the event by going to www.calgaryrowing.com/alumni
