July 2015 Monthly Bulletin

WCSG TEAM
The 2015 WCSG Team has been selected. The ARA wants to congratulate everyone who tried out for the team. Regardless of whether or not you one of the 17 athletes selected to the team, you should be extremely pleased with yourself.

The erg scores needed to simply attend the selection camp were aggressive with athletes needing to achieve a 2K erg standard of 7:05 (Men) and 8:05 (Women). In the selection camp itself we could see the technical improvements athletes have made over the past few months making our job of selecting a team of 17 a difficult one. Congratulations to everyone who was a part of the selection process. It is on account of your efforts that has bettered the team as a whole.

The 17 athletes that will represent Team Alberta at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games in Fort McMurray are as follows:

From Calgary
Kyle Pollock, Veronique Ulrich, Claire Hinse, Hannah Kennedy, Brielle Thorsen, Tavis Enno, Liam Vanderbeek, Nick Morrison, Phil Kirker, Curtis Holloway, Kamran Ranji, Emma Kelly, Katrina Wit

From Edmonton
Aaron Harrower, Erin Watchman, Sarah Power, Erik Hohnstein

Now the hard part. We have to get everyone together as a team. As coaches we will do our part. As for the athletes, all we ask is that you attend 7-8 practices per week within your local club,.   If all athletes can put forth this kind of an effort over the next 35 days it is our opinion that we will achieve the successes we all want.

U23 National Team and National Squads
Congratulations to Nicole Hare whose performance at the 2015 U23 Selection Camp has earned her a seat in the Women’s 4- that will race for Canada at the upcoming U23 World Championships in Plodiv, Bulgaria. At the 2015 U23 World Rowing Championships Nicole will be looking to better her performance from last years event where she earned a bronze medal in the Women’s 4-. Good luck Nicole.

Not to be outdone Beth McConnell and Jessie Loutit of the ERC and CRC respectively represented Canada this past week in the women’s four at the 2015 FISU Games in Gwangiu, South Korea. The FISU games are a multi sport event featuring some of the world’s talented university athletes. For those following the action Jessie and Beth narrowly missed out on the podium finishing in fourth place. Congratulations to both Beth and Jessie.

Aline Belzil and coach Ali Williams from the ERC just packed their bags and are now in Mexico City as part of the CanAmMex Regatta. The CanAmMex regatta brings together top junior athletes from Canada, United States and Mexico and serves as an important step in the development towards Junior and U23 National Teams. Congratulations Aline and Ali.

Henley Funding
The 2015 Henley Funding document is nearly finalized (we promise) and will soon be posted on the ARA website. Please note that there will be relatively few changes from 2014.

NRC Selection Document
It is hard to believe that the National Rowing Championships is now only three months away. This year’s NRC Regatta will take place Thanksgiving Weekend in St. Catharines, Ontario and will serve as the first step towards selection for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

Alberta Open
Everyone please mark your calendars for July 25th, 2015; the date for this year’s Alberta Open regatta. Unfortunately, given the cancellation of the Prairie Championships, the Alberta Open represents that last and only true sprint regatta in Alberta for this 2015 Calendar year.   Please try to attend. Everyone can use the race experience.
